The earliest known structures
so far discovered in the vicinity of
Stonehenge were great timber posts
erected as far back as the Mesolithic
period, in roughly 7500 BC, when
Britain was largely forested and
inhabited by hunter-gatherers.
Possibly “totem poles”, the positions
of three of them are marked by large
painted white circles in the car park.
