EAL is a problem. In Englang alone, ewe speak about 200 languages, and increasing numbers of our pupils don't speak much English. We know we shuold be doing more about it but, a lot of the time, we don't exactlt know what. Possibly, admitting this difficulty is a starting point. You're a geography teacher, not EFL teacher.
And EAL most certainly isn't EFL anyway. You want to help these children. So what are you actually supposed to do?
School have extremely varied structural answers to this question. You may be working in an environment with a dedicated language unit or with specialist taeching assistant, os both. On the other hand, there are still UK schools with little or no formal EAL provision. So it's hard to generalise. Here's a basic position and a few basic suggestions to go with it.
