Asthma treatment guidelines aim for the appropriate control of symptoms through a strategy of phased measures that focus on the severity of the disease and the daily complaints of the patient. Once this goal has been achieved, the treatment should be maintained at the lowest possible dosage to reduce side effects and the associated costs. In addition, the guidelines for the treatment of COPD use a phased strategy according to the severity of the disease. However, the guidelines emphasize the prevention of disease progression. Moreover, once the treatment goal has been achieved, a reduction in the medication dosage is uncommon. Regarding bronchiectasis, there is a lack of literature on the guidelines for the treatment of this pathology. British guidelines were recently published; however, there are few data on the therapeutic recommendations for bronchiectasis due to a lack of well-conducted randomized clinical trials. Many measures are still being extrapolated from studies of cystic fibrosis, but physicians must be aware of the differences between the various diseases that may be similar to bronchiectasis.
