As far as health outcomes are concerned, the energy expenditure is usually required to be well above resting levels (Bouchard and Shephard 1994). For example, while I could be classified as being physically active while writing this book (fingers are moving fairly rapidly across the keyboard), this type of physical activity is largely irrelevant for health. However, in special cases such manipulative skills are encouraging the maintenance of functional capacity and life quality, such as in very old or activity-impaired individuals.
