INTRODUCTION
Biological invasions are nothing new as far as
the evolutionary process is concerned. Such
invasions are characteristic of all living
organisms and have occurred since the origin
of animal and plant species and long before
human existence on this planet. Biological
invasions by plants, animals, and
microorganisms are as equally ancient as
human civilization, and are ongoing
chronologically indistinguishable by man.
However, biological invasions have lately
become one of the major global issues of
concern since June 1992 soon after the
UNCED's Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil. Among some of the important events
that happened after that was the adoption of
the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD)
which, after the required number of ratification
by the signatories, was entered into force since
December 1993.
