Nezumiaaequalis and Coelorinchusmediterraneus areabundantspeciesontheupperandlower
continentalslopes,respectively,intheMediterraneanSea.Astudyonthereproductivestrategyof
the twospecieswasconductedontheCatalanmargin(NWMediterranean).Thereproductivecycleof
both specieswasinvestigatedusingvisualanalysesofgonadsandhistologicalscreening.Theshallower
species, N. aequalis, showedcontinuousreproductionwithapeakofspawningfemalesinwinter
months.Incontrast,thedeeper-livingspecies, C. mediterraneus, showedsemi-continuousreproduction
with aregressionperiodduringthespring.Juvenilesof N. aequalis werepresentinallseasons,butmost
abundantinthespring.Onlytwojuvenilesof C. mediterraneus werefound.Bothspecieshad
asynchronousoocytedevelopment.Theaveragefecundityof N. aequalis was 10,630oocytesper
individual,lowerthanknownforthesamespeciesintheAtlanticOcean.Thefecundityof
C. mediterraneus was measuredforthefirsttimeinthisstudy,withanaverageof7693oocytesper
