Millions of tourist come annually to visit the Colosseum, a site considered one of the most interesting in Rome and even world wide. The amphitheatre becomes a symbol of the international campaign against capital punishment, abolished in Italy in 1948.
The Colosseum is the place where many anti–death penalty demonstrations took. The local authorities decides to support the campaign against the death penalty - the color of the Colosseum's night time illumination changes from white to gold, when a person condemned to the death penalty anywhere in the world gets their sentence commuted or is released, and also when a jurisdiction abolishes the death penalty.
The Colosseum can no longer be used for big shows, because of the ruined state of the interior. But many shows, concerts have been held outside. Ray Charles, Paul McCartney and Elton John are just some of the great singers who performed here.
The Colosseum was voted as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.
Tourists can also find in the upper lever of the outer wall, a museum dedicated to Eros.
The Colosseum is also depicted on the Italian version of the five-cent euro coin.
