In most East Asian American cultures, such as Cambodia, high-context, non verbal communication is the standard. The people are typically polite, yet submissive in social encounters; when a disagreement or argument arises they may become very hostile without giving any sort of warning (Huang, page. 3.). This type of situation happens most often in situations where there is conversation with someone of a low-context and even more verbal communication style therefore making Cambodians and other Asian American people feel uneasy. The reason why Asians use non verbal communication is to avoid giving offence, or being rude. Usually they refrain from responding with remarks towards them completely.
