I might have occurred to many of you that poverty runs in some sort of a vicious cycle. Let’s say there is this one girl name Dang living in a small place which could hardly be called a house. More often than not, girls like Dang live with some elderly or little siblings, or some handicap in her family and she has to struggle to sustain the whole family. Then, what happen? You can guess that because of such a burden, Dang couldn’t afford to go to school and exchange the time that she could go work to study. Now, Dang might be able to support her family. But in the long run what happen? That is all the life she could have. She could only work and work and work to support the family day to day. And nothing gets better really.
That’s the vicious cycle about poverty, I’m trying to explain. And unfortunately, we have so many girls or boys like Dang here in Thailand that are now struggling in such a cycle. So, what lies at the bottom of these tragedies really?
It’s disparity. Although the word has become some sort of a cliche that everyone is talking about it, but nobody can really do anything about it.
For example, every time the country has political parties running for the government, they all promise they would try to tackle disparity or inequity. But has anything got better? Not really.
Currently, to my knowledge, less than one per cent of the total population in Thailand -- 70 million -- possess the assets totalling more than half of the assets of everyone in the country gathering together. That is one of the biggest problem that needs fix real bad. And to do that, it is the government’s job to make sure that fair distribution of income works well in the country. And firstly, it has to stop adopting policies in favor of the super rich minority in the country sponsoring them.
One of the things that could be done is that the government come up with the tax paying system that could ensure those earning more money pay more tax. For example, it could start with reducing conditions open for the capitalists to exploit and avoid paying tax. Then, the coiney received by the rich through the means of taxation could distribute to the have-not in other ways. Among them was to subsidize poor kids for good education.
And education is the most important thing that could end disparity like in the so-called Dang’s case. If kids like that get to have a good education that suits well with her condition, the tragedies can surely be alleviated.
The lack of education cause her to be trapped in the cycle. Thus, if the opportunity disparity is cut down and poor kids get to go to schools, they can have a better life and can share that with the rest of her family.
So, these two points are crucial if the country is to develop. It should be made a priority that the government deal with inequity pervasive in society. When everyone can have access to the same educational standard, many other problems that come after it will be as well prevented. The country as well as the world can more steadily walk towards the better.
Had this main and most essential point be neglected, the country is not going to go anywhere. Rather, the problem is going only to be exploited by the politicians during the campaign period that they run for seats in the parliament.
