Bosma et al. (2011) calculated the primary energy use at 13.2 GJ
per tonne Pangasius produced at the farm gate. Personal communication
with Roel Bosma revealed that biomass was not taken into
account in this primary energy calculation. We calculated primary
energy consumption using the Cumulative Energy Demand (CED)
method (Frischknecht et al., 2007). In our study, the CED amounts
to 33 GJ per tonne Pangasius produced at the farm gate, including
contributions of biomass (55%), fossil fuels (32%), hydro energy
(10%) and nuclear energy (3%). If we subtract the contribution of
biomass to our total CED value and we exclude the hatchery phase
as Bosma et al. (2011) did, we obtain a CED value of 14 GJ, which is
quite similar to the result of Bosma et al. (2011). The ratio of the CED
value to the CEENE value in our study is 11%. CEENE values are
typically higher than CED values, due to the inclusion of nonenergy
resources and the definition of different system boundaries.
A more comprehensive explanation of this difference can be
found in Dewulf et al. (2007).

Dewulf et al, (2007).
