Morden (1998) goes even further to suggest that Korean management practices have much in common with those in France. Both of these countries have a high degree of power distance and are authoritarian. Both countries have high levels of uncertainty avoidance according to Hofstede’s model (1980), there is also low trust and both have their clans. Hierarchy is important in both cultures and there has been a history of intervention by government in trade and industry stemming back to the ideas of Colbertism. In addition, there are strong family businesses in both cultures.
Functional authority is a key in both cultures according to Morden (1998). A long‐term incremental approach is imposed which has been unfashionable in the USA and the UK. The workforce is increasingly well qualified in both countries. There is also an increasing acceptance of women in management roles.
