Fat and oil extracts of rambutan (Nephelium lappaceum) seeds obtained by supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-CO2)
technique at 35 MPa and 45°C were evaluated for possible toxicity in rats and rabbits. A single oral dose of rambutan fat
and oil extracts at levels up to 5,000 mg/kg bodyweight was not lethal to rats. The acute dermal LD50 in Wistar rats was
greater than 2,000 mg/kg bodyweight. The dermal treatment of rambutan fat and oil extracts did not produce irritation
effects to rabbits. There were no treatment-related deaths or any toxicity in all animals until the terminal necropsy. Based
on the results of this study, rambutan seed fat and oil extracts are practically non-toxic.
