Critical Attributes

Critical attributes, according to Walker and Avant(1995), help diff e rentiate the phenomenon from other similar or related concepts. The defining attributes may change as the understanding of the concept improves ,
and may change over time if the concept changes. “The effort is to try to show the cluster of attributes that are
the most frequently associated with the concept and that allow the analyst the broadest insight into the concept”
( Walker & Avant, p. 41). It is worth noting that this concept analysis was not done in the linear process that
might be implied by the organization of this article. For example, the critical attributes emerged with the construction of the cases and identification of the antecedents helped to refine the attributes.

All attributes that are necessary characteristics of the concept must be present for a valid description of healing.
In order to say that healing is occurring, there must be:

A sense of transcending the immediate environment or situation, such as the experience of persistent pain
to a mode of perception and acceptance beyond the suffering that includes a wider view of the world.
Pain may be an accepted integrated part of the self,while the individual feels fully human and able to rebalance
energy.

A sense of timeless connection, unity, and interdependence with the self and others. With acceptance of the
self, the person is able to give and take in relationships and to express a wide range of thoughts and emotions .

A sense of inner knowing, strength, and peace, even in the face of pain or suffering. The person has a sense
of meaning and purpose in life.

Antecedents and Consequences

Healing is not an isolated process in a person’s life. It involves the person’s frame of reference (subjective reality).
It involves many levels of consciousness, such as awareness, perceptions of self, thoughts, values, feelings,
intuitive insights, beliefs, and hopes (Watson, 1988). In order to further refine the critical attributes, the following
antecedents and consequences of healing are identified.The conditions or capacities that must be present in
order for healing to occur include an ability to:

1 . View alternate perspectives, not being stuck in one’s
own way of seeing situations.
2 . Transcend the personal ego and to forgive .
3 . Find meaning and purpose in pain and suffering .

Consequences, on the other hand, are those events or incidents that occur as a result of the occurrence of the
concept (Walker & Avant, 1995). The consequences that may occur as a result of healing taking place are :

1 . An opening up to the universe, enabling the individual
to make choices and decisions.
2 . An acceptance and integration of pain and suffering .
3 . A sense of wholeness, seeing oneself fully human and
capable of multiple roles beyond a person in pain.
4 . Expressions of feelings of love, forgiveness, and trust .
5 . Expressions of compassion and nonjudgment.
6 . Hope for the future .

Model Case

A model case is a real life example of the use of the concept.It includes all the critical attributes of healing and
none of the attributes of any other concept (Walker &Avant, 1995). The story of Sharon may be considered an
example of a model case in which all of the attributes are present and healing is demonstrated.

Sharon ’s story. Sharon worked in an office and tripped over a box that had been left near the filing cabinet,
injuring her leg. She continued to experience pain
