Minimally
invasive laparoscopic colectomy may be
an option for patients whose tumors are not in
the rectum or transverse colon, as well as those
without locally advanced or metastatic cancer,
acute obstruction or perforation, or extensive
abdominal adhesions. Only experienced surgeons
also skilled in open abdominal exploratory surgery
should perform laparoscopic colectomies, and
both closed and open procedures are therapeutically
equivalent when performed by skilled
surgeons in institutions where these procedures
are frequently conducted.
