The outcomevariables are 1) food security; 2) the household income
in Bhutanese Ngultrum; 3) food poverty. The household food security is
measured by the number of number of calories taken by the individual
(home produced food + purchased from the market). Household income
was generated by summing the income from different sources
like agriculture, livestock, forest products (both timber and nontimber),
wage income, income from business, and income from other
sources. Food poverty was calculated using the food poverty line estimated
by the National Statistical Bureau of Bhutan (NSB). The food poverty
line is based on the estimated cost of a single national reference
food bundle providing an average subsistence diet of 2124 Kcal per
day (i.e., averaged over persons of all ages and both sexes). The food
basket used in was representative of the diet of a reference population.
The food poverty linewas estimated to be Ngultrum1154.74 per person
per month, at 2012 prices. Using food poverty line and household food
consumption, we estimated food poverty; food Poverty is a binary variable,
“1” if the household is below food poverty line and “0” if the
household is above food poverty line.
