Grade 5 Mathematics
In Grade 5 Math class we cover the following topics: numbers, data analysis, geometry and measurement. In this class we focus on teaching skills and basic concepts related to application and estimation using the four operations, geometry, fractions, proportions, percentage and problem solving. We use a variety of teaching methods and tools such as hands-on activities, group work, games and manipulatives in order to improve students’ communication, problem solving and thinking and organizational skills. To evaluate the students’ performance in math class we use a variety of assessment strategies written exams, performance tasks, projects and formative assessment.
Grade 6 Mathematics
In Grade 6 Mathematics class we cover the following topics: numbers, probability and data analysis, introduction to algebra, geometry, measurement and set theory. In this class we focus on first having the students estimate the answers of the four operations with whole numbers and fractions and then practice performing these operations. We also focus on teaching basic concepts of geometry and probability, equations and problem solving strategies. We use a variety of teaching strategies and hands-on activities such as use of manipulatives, group work and games to improve the students’ communication, problem solving and critical thinking and organizational skills. Interdisciplinary connections across other subjects are also made to promote meaningful understanding and learning. To evaluate the students’ performance in math class we use a variety of assessment strategies such as exams, projects, performance tasks and formative assessments.
Grade 7 Mathematics
The Grade 7 Mathematics program aims to enable the students to interpret mathematical situations and structures using algebraic symbols and to use the language of mathematics to express geometrical ideas. The major topics covered in this class are: numbers, algebra, geometry, statistic, probability and measurement. In this class we focus on making connections between these topics to promote meaningful understanding and to improve the students’ operational and problem solving skills and logical thinking. We use a variety of teaching strategies, instructional material and resources such as interactive websites, manipulatives, games and group work to enable the students to acquire certain skills such as analyzing problems, recognizing the properties of geometric figures, identifying and organizing given data and making connections. To evaluate the students’ performance in math class we use a variety of assessment strategies such as exams, projects, performance tasks and formative assessments.
