Disregard of the "who should attend?" instruction. This is a common problem
with all short courses and workshops offered in the Arabian Gulf Region. The
brochures clearly state for whom the courses are designed, or who should
attend them. The idea is to enable library administrations to send relevant
people to the event. However, only a small number of participants for whom
the course is really intended will attend it. A majority of them will come from
other functional areas. As a result, the instructors have to adjust the level of
instruction and use less technical language to make their lectures understandable
for all the participants. For example, a cataloger would know what a GMD
(General Material Designation) is, but a non-cataloging librarian would need
it explained in detail what it stands for and where it is used in the description
of a catalog record.
