An explanatory case study framework was used to investigate the research questions (Yin, 2003). As Yin (2003, p. 13) suggested, a case study is an empirical inquiry that “investigates a contemporary phenomenon within its real-life context.” A case study approach is used when researchers ask “how” or “why” questions about complex social phenomena, such as investigations of concepts related to “program theory” that aim to build program-level, and eventually context-level explanations. The case study approach was appropriate for this study because we explored a group of people as a single case, using interviews, focus groups, and observations, and the outcomes of this research are case-based themes (Creswell, Hanson, Plano Clark, & Morales, 2007). The aim was to develop an in-depth explanation of how the camp experience provided supports and opportunities for positive youth development to campers.
