Lesson COG 37
Task: Identify printed first name.
Prerequisites: ADT 1, ADT 4, ADT 5, COG 22
Concept: In this exercise, a phonics approach is not used because words, such as a person's name, can sometimes be better learned from a sight-word (reading the whole word) approach. The concept is to initially use the student's pointing skills and proceed to greater and greater visual discrimination until it becomes apparent that the name itself is being clearly identified.
Behavioral Objective: When shown a printed form of the student's name from a field of five choices and asked to "point to your name," the student will correctly point to his or her own name to a 90% accuracy level for 20 trials.
Materials: Index cards and a black marker.
Task Analysis:
1. Review with the student the exercise of matching letters (see prerequisite COG 22), using only the letters from the student's own first name.
2. In clear block letters, draw the student's name on a card and draw a series of letters not contained in the student's name (using the same amount of letters) on another card. As needed, physically guide the student in pointing to his or her name from these two choices.
3. Continue Step 2, drawing the names of another student or family member's name (instead of just random letters) for the card that is not to be chosen.
4. Continue Step 3, adding another card to the field from which the student must choose.
5. Add to Step 4 another card that contains the same first letter of the student's name but otherwise is not the correct choice.
6. Increase the random presentation to five choices and include some cards that have many of the letters contained in the student's name.
