Beauty and aesthetics are very subjective and can be uniquely different for each person. What might look like a jumbled mess of scribbles might be a thing of beauty and artistic genius to another.
There are certain forms of "art" that I don't appreciate or understand, but that doesn't mean it isn't art. One that comes to mind is "Artist's Shit" by Piero Manzoni (1961) which can be seen at the world renowned Guggenheim Museum in New York City. It is literally a collection of cans of the artist's own poop... and a can of it recently sold for $150,000! ...or there was the French artist, Yves Klein, who created the "Monotone Symphony" which consisted of a single 20-minute sustained chord followed by a 20-minute silence. I personally think that is ridiculous, but each of these examples are respected "works of art". So does my own opinion mean that they are NOT art? They may not seem like "art" to me, but the mere fact that they produce an emotional response from me (mostly of disbelief and anger) proves their artistic value in our cultural dialogue.
