Siheyuan is probably the most famous Chinese residences by far, which mainly concentrates in Beijing. Symmetry, one of the most important norms of Chinese local residence, finds the fullest expression here. Buildings are constructed on axis. In federal society, there was strict code to make sure dwellers occupying the right space according to their status in family. The house facing the south is the main house, which is lived by the master of the family as a privilege, and the side houses are inhabited by their children. Siheyuan features affinity to nature, thus is ideal living space. Even today, many people still dream of living in such houses. The rising skyscrapers which have devoured massive areas of city, keeping spread. Gradually, the ancient Siheyuan, is shrinking. Loaded with too much memory, we cannot afford to swipe them away.
