According to Goulet et al. (1998), “attachment is an
interactional process” (p.1073) that seems to flow in one
direction, beginning with acquaintance and moving over
time toward attachment. Attachment attributes or behaviors
are characterized by proximity, or seeking and keeping the infant close; by the reciprocity of verbal and nonverbal
communication; and by the development of positive/love
feelings or commitment (Goulet et al., 1998;
Klaus & Kennell, 1983). Karen (1994) has stated that such
attachment behaviors are essential for attaining a higher
level of affiliation, or for permitting a love relationship to
grow.
