Yes this is a confusing title, it comes from a German saying "Ich will jemand, mit dem ich Pferde stehlen kann". That is not the literal saying but it's close enough, so I can explain the meaning. I had never heard of this saying before today & now I thank the good friend who shared it with me. Being quite ignorant of the meaning, I did some research & found it to be a really heartfelt saying. So much so that I decided to make it the subject of my blog. It is used in conjunction with defining relationships be it friendships or love interests.
Simply put it means someone who can be all things to you, with you & for you, someone you can rely on, no matter what, they always have your back, (hence the stealing). Someone you can be yourself with, someone who still remembers what it's like to have fun & be silly. Someone who is your lover & your best friend & the two roles merge in to one, seamlessly.
For me it conjures up a picture of reckless wild abandonment, laughter & inhibition, like Heathcliff & Cathy on the moors in Wuthering Heights. Yes I know it's just a book, or Noah & Allie in The Notebook also a book & a movie. Both depict deep rooted love & devotion. I especially like a comment Allie made to Noah when she was torn between staying with him & going back home to marry someone else: Look at us, we're already fighting.
Noah: Well, that's what we do! We fight! You tell me when I'm being an arrogant son of a bitch and I tell you when you're being a pain in the ass, which you are, 99% of the time. I'm not afraid to hurt your feelings. You have like a two second rebound rate, then you're back doing the next pain-in-the-ass thing.
But the fact was, they loved one another & there is nothing wrong with honesty between 2 people, an unspoken permit that allows each to let the other know when they are being unreasonable. Without spite or cruelty I might add. In order to achieve this kind of relationship there has to be a strong sense of trust & commitment & I think it goes hand in hand with unconditional love. Remembering how to have fun, & by that I don't mean being entertained, more like BE the entertainment, don't be afraid to be silly, carefree & spontaneous. It beats the hell out of anti-depressants.
I can honestly say that I have friends who I could steal horses with, & they are gifts in my life I truly appreciate. When it comes to love relationships I don't think I have ever felt this kind of connection, maybe a glimpse but nothing lasting. At the same time, I don't think there is room for blame here, it just happens that they were different people who could maybe steal horses with someone else, just not me.
