The challenge for a leader is to develop differentiated relationships with some subordinates
to facilitate achievement of the team’s mission, while maintaining a relationship of mutual
trust, respect, and loyalty with the other subordinates. It is not necessary to treat all subordinates
exactly the same, but each person should perceive that he or she is an important and respected
member of the team rather than a “second-class citizen.” Not every subordinate may desire more
responsibility, but each person should perceive an equal opportunity based on competence rather
than arbitrary favoritism.
