It was already around 4 in the morning when they drove back to Shin Hye’s hotel. The drive was quiet and peaceful, with Min Ho holding Shin Hye’s hand the entire time. Geun Suk texted her some important instructions earlier. She only needed to go back to her room without her manager or any of her staff knowing. Geun Suk had told them that after dinner, Shin Hye was too tired and wanted to be alone. And since she’s been having a hard time sleeping, that she shouldn’t be disturbed at all.
Min Ho dropped her off a few feet away from the entrance of the hotel. ‘Take care,’ he squeezed her hand. ‘Good luck sneaking in.’
Shin Hye nodded as she unfastened her seatbelt. ‘I’ll see you in Seoul,’ she smiled. She was about to go out, but Min Ho’s hand was still gripping her hand. She tried pulling it out, but Min Ho wouldn’t let her go. ‘Ya.’
He lifted her hand and kissed the back of her palm. ‘Thank you for tonight. For not walking away. For believing in me enough to give me another chance. For that kiss. For giving me something to look forward to. For saying that you still love me.’
Shin Hye felt her cheeks flush. ‘Oppa.’
He freed her hand and gave her a wave. ‘Have a safe flight.’
She watched as he drove away before quietly entering the hotel. She hurriedly asked for her room key from the front desk, hoping that no one else would see. When she got to her floor, she tiptoed to her room, which was at the end of the hallway. As soon as she was inside, she immediately went to the bathroom to change. Their flight was at 8:30 A.M. and she knew that her manager could barge into her room anytime now. She quickly cleaned up and climbed onto her bed. She could swear that it wasn’t only five minutes after, when she heard a knock on her door. She blinked her eyes long and hard in an attempt to look like she just woke up, before she rose and opened the door.
‘Hmm,’ she grunted, pretending to be groggy.
‘Ya, stop acting. It’s me.’
When Shin Hye looked up, she saw Geun Suk with ruffled hair smiling at her, wearing only a tank top and jogging pants. He instantly stepped inside her room and closed the door behind him. Shin Hye was wide-eyed and confused. ‘How can you be awake? It’s only 5 in the morning.’
‘I didn’t sleep. Got back at around three and figured I should wait for you since you’re my responsibility,’ Geun Suk replied. ‘I asked the front desk to call me once you arrive.’
‘Aish,’ Shin Hye hit his arm. ‘Don’t you think that sounds too fishy?’
‘Shin Hye, I told you to stop being so violent,’ he complained. ‘It’s not like I was the one who slept over somewhere else.’
‘YA!’
Geun Suk grinned. ‘So what happened?’ He narrowed his eyes and gave Shin Hye a once over. ‘Did you two…’
That earned him another whack in the arm.
‘Oww! I was going to ask if you two got back together, you perv.’
Shin Hye mumbled her apology and smiled sheepishly in response. ‘Sort of.’
‘Sort of?’
‘We’re taking it slow this time,’ she explained, remembering Min Ho’s words. She still had butterflies in her stomach thinking about what went down at Geun Suk’s villa. ‘Nothing too hot and heavy. Just… slower.’
Geun Suk crossed his arms. ‘Well, that’s definitely better than both of you moping around and being heartbroken all over the place. For the lack of my own love life, I’m glad at least I could help you two get the love you deserve,’ he teasingly made gagging motions that made Shin Hye chuckle. ‘I’ll have to call Min Ho later and threaten him some more.’
Shin Hye flashed him a grateful smile, feeling so fortunate that Geun Suk was around. They’ve always been close, but during the last few years, they saw each other less and less. It was odd and cute that it took Min Ho entering their lives to push them closer than ever.
‘Thank you, oppa. I take back regretting inviting you to dinner that night.’ She walked back to her bed and crawled inside the sheets, her head resting on the headboard. ‘How was the party last night? Did my manager and my stylist have one of their drunken arguments in front of everyone again?’
Geun Suk furrowed his brows and lied down at the foot of Shin Hye’s bed, facing the television. He grabbed the remote control and turned it on. ‘I didn’t go to the staff dinner. I went to my buddy’s house. That was the party I was talking about last night. I told my staff I was sleeping in early, too.’
‘Ahh, chincha?’ Shin Hye replied absentmindedly as she stifled a yawn. She was wide awake when Min Ho dropped her off, but now that she was on the bed, her all-nighter with him was starting to take a toll on her body. ‘Aren’t you going to sleep?’
‘Our flight’s in a few hours. If I sleep now, I’ll just be cranky when I wake up an hour after,’ Geun Suk retorted, flipping channels. ‘Let’s just watch TV while we wait.’
Shin Hye nodded in agreement, but found herself sinking more and more into her bed. Geun Suk stopped on a music channel and turned the volume up. Whenever Shin Hye’s eyelids fell, she widened her eyes and softly sang along to Big Bang’s ‘Fantastic Baby’ that was currently playing on TV.
‘Park Shin Hye.’
Shin Hye fluttered her eyes open at the familiar yet stern voice that called her name. She sat up and saw her manager by the door. He didn’t look too happy. She rubbed her eyes with the back of her hand and yawned. ‘Oppa, I’m awake. I just closed my eyes for a bit.’
After opening her eyes fully and getting her senses back, she realized that there were two other people in the room, standing behind him – her stylist and Geun Suk’s manager. All were looking at her with baffled expressions. That was when she noticed Geun Suk sprawled on her bed and sleeping a feet away from her. She suddenly remembered they were watching TV to keep awake, but that plan obviously failed and he must have dozed off, too.
‘Jang Geun Suk.’ His manager called, but he stayed in place, away from the bed. It was as if the three of them refused to go near them.
Shin Hye immediately came out of the sheets and got up on her feet. She knew how it must have looked. They didn’t attend the group dinner, they both told their staff they were sleeping early, and not to come by their rooms to disturb them. She opened her mouth to speak, but was interrupted when Geun Suk stirred on the bed. ‘Shin Hye, do we have to go now?’ He slurred.
Shin Hye’s eyes widened and flitted on the three people who were eyeing her suspiciously. ‘It’s not what you think!’ She grabbed a pillow from the bed and threw it at Geun Suk who sat up, startled.
‘Wae? Wae?’ He scratched his head, scowling, and looked around the room. Without a care in the world, he got up. ‘I’m awake, I’m awake. Kaja,’ he walked to the door. Shin Hye wanted to stop him so he could explain why he was in her room. But before he could go out, he turned back to Shin Hye. ‘You owe me for last night,’ he winked.
‘YAAAAA!’
Her stylist gasped, covering her mouth. Shin Hye heard Geun Suk chuckle as he stepped out of the room.
Shin Hye shook her head vigorously. ‘Anya. Anya. We were just…’
‘Airport now. Explain later,’ Joon cut her off without removing the judgmental scowl on his face.
Shin Hye looked down and ran a hand through her hair. For some reason, she found herself chuckling, too. She was in too good a mood to be stressing over anything. Absolutely nothing can ruin this day, she thought. To their surprise, she grinned at them.
‘Don’t you just love Jeju Island?’
