This Robert Browning poem has a rhyme scheme, and a unique structure. The first 6 verses of this poem are very short, as it is describing the star, then as the verses get longer the story of the star begins to form. It is no longer a description, as it is a comparison between other stars. Throughout this poem alliteration of “star” and of “red” and “blue” occur. This repetition occurs as the description of the star is vital to the poem. “..Of a certain star...” is an example of euphemism. The author is being vague towards his love, as he is first introducing us to her. Two similes are used in this poem as it compares the star to a bird, and a flower. My first interpretation of this poem was that it was about the American flag. The red, blue, and stars made me draw that conclusion. But reading further into it, I believe it is a long poem. As the structure of the poem changes, it is symbolizes how love changes. And how the author’s true love changes (not necessarily for the worse or for the better). He begins to say that his friends also have stars, but that it doesn’t matter because his is the only one that is important to him as she ‘opened her soul to him’.
