The advantages of statistically based quality improvement techniques lie in their effective exploit of historical data and well-founded statistical theories. New perspectives and understanding of the process can be provided. Furthermore, engineering knowledge can be tested by properly using statistical tools. The disadvantage is that statistical tools are not effective if data is unreliable, insufficient, or hard to collect, which often happen in machining processes. The physical understanding of variation transmission is also limited from statistical approaches.
