Sabine C. Koch from Germany introduced pattern analysis with THEME (Magnusson, 2000) and its use for movement observation in clinical and non-clinical contexts. Her group case study provided an example of pattern analysis of defensive behavior in a conflict situation vs. a non-conflict situation. THEME, a pattern analysis method that preserves the complexity of the original behavior data, allowed to integratively look at verbal and nonverbal behaviors: talking times, back channeling, gaze patterns, affect display, and movement qualities. The research particularly focused on use of efforts vs. preefforts. Defensive movement was related to social influence, conflict, and face-threat as predicted by KMP-theory (Kestenberg & Sossin, 1979). The potential of pattern analysis in D/MT research was discussed.
