toseekthesocialsupportneededtoreducethestresstheyexperienceintheir
hostcountry.Further,genderdifferencesareexaminedanddiscussed.Aquan-
titativesurveyofmen(n 56),primarilyBangladeshisworkinginblue-collar
occupations,andwomen(n 60),primarilyFilipinadomestics,wascon-
ductedinSingapore.Forwomen,mobileusealleviatedstressbyincreasingso-
cialsupport;emotionalsupporthadthegreatestimpactontheirpsychological
well-being.Malemigrantworkersweremorelikelytoexperiencestressthe
moretheyusedtheirmobilephonesandwhenreceivingincreasedemotional
support.Thisªndingisincontrasttotraditionallyheldassumptionsaboutthe
beneªcialimpactsofmobilephones.Wecautionagainsttreatingimmigrants
asahomogeneousgroup,andrecommendinclusionofvariablessuchasgen-
dertounderstandtheroleoftechnology-mediatedsocialsupportinalleviating
migrantstress.Wefurtherproposethatpoliciesandprogramsfacilitating
transnationalcommunicationforlow-incomemigrantsneedtobeexamined
carefullyintermsoftheirunintendedimpacts.
