Adjusted birth weight was calculated in
calves who received colostrum before data collection by
subtracting the estimated weight of colostrum consumed
from the birth weight. Physiological measurements
included rectal temperature, heart rate, respiration rate,
and capillary refill time. Blood samples of calves were
collected by jugular venipuncture for analysis of serum
biochemical values. Blood samples were transported on
ice to the laboratory where serumwas harvested and stored
at 20 C until analysis. Biochemical parameters in serum
were determined using a chemistry analyzer (Hitachi
Model 912 Analyzer, Boehringer Mannheim, Mannheim,
Germany).
