Home Depot has now issued a comprehensive supplier Code of Conduct that sets out standards, including sustainability requirements, for anyone doing business with the company. The issues covered include worker safety, air and water emissions, disposal of chemicals and hazardous wastes, bribes, fraud, and conflicts of interest. The company conducts annual audits of suppliers’ social and environmental responsibility programs, including unannounced visits to their forests and facilities. For suppliers who do not have a sustainability or corporate responsibility program, Home Depot will work with them to build their internal capabilities to meet the requirements. This rigorous supply chain management takes real management time and involves substantial costs, but the value of brand protection far outweighs the burden
