Christopher Jeffries giving evidence to the Leveson Inquiry into phone hacking and media ethics, Mr. Jefferies told how his life was turned upside down over a fortnight of press intrusion, when he was arrested and released without charge over the killed of Bristol architect Joanna Yeates. Mr. Jefferies, who was Miss Yeates' landlord at the time of her death, gave two statements to police but was vilified by the press in what he later described as a “character assassination” with many assuming his guilt. He said he was “besieged” by the press after release and had to go from “safe house to safe house” visiting friends. “In effect, for a period after he was released, he was effectively under house arrest. Eight titles – “the Sun, Daily Mirror, Sunday Mirror, Daily Record, Daily Mail, Daily Star, Scotsman and Daily Express” agreed to pay Jefferies substantial libel damages after a court case. In effect for a period after Mr. Jefferies released he was effectively under house and went from friend to friends, In his witness statement, he said “I can see now that, following my arrest, the national media shamelessly vilified me. Moreover, Mr. Jefferies said they having his photograph on the front page of a number of papers had made him “instantly recognisable”. And He told the inquiry that he bought legal proceedings against eight newspapers concerning 40 different articles. Robert Jay QC, asked Mr, Jefferise about when he was referred to as a “sexually perverted voyeur”. Mr. Jefferies said “It was suggested there may have been some sort of sexual motive to the murder of Jo Yeates and at that time he was obviously a suspect of that murder. “It was then suggested in another article that he was Bisexual so the press were trying to have it every possible way.” In this situation, media should not judge Mr. Jefferise before the police and the courts because it can make people misunderstand and be negative to him. It was effectively for a period of his life that he could not be freedom. This day many of people using a media to gian the news. However, if media shows the false imformation, it be able to turn someone life upside down like this case.
