For example, to fill the science gaps we identify above will require significant funding and time, but it would be most efficient if these research gaps could be prioritized through a candid conversation with policy- and decision-makers about which research gaps are perceived as the most important to fill in order to fulfill the mandate of Canada’s policies and laws. We suggest that it is time for Canada to articulate a coordinated national ocean noise strategy that relates to marine wildlife, including but not limited to species at risk. A national ocean noise strategy is needed to address potential impacts so that the
(1) issues are identified
clearly to scientists, industrial proponents and regulators alike,
(2) best possible approaches are employed across the board rather
than in a piecemeal way, and
(3) some measure of protection is
offered to acoustically sensitiv
