Tourism expenditure in South Australia in the year to December
2013 was $5.1b. The diagram below shows visitor expenditure
occurs across a broad geographical area, for a broad range of
purposes and by visitors from a broad range of origins.
Adelaide currently receives 56% of total visitor expenditure
to South Australia. Therefore the regions share the remaining
44% of expenditure; however given that the Australian Bureau
of Statistic reports that only 23% of the State’s population
live outside of Adelaide, tourism expenditure is an important
economic driver in regions. It is essential for Adelaide and the
regions to work cooperatively together, as research consistently
shows visitors to South Australia have the highest satisfaction
when their visit includes a mix of both Adelaide and regions.
