The houses of the upper class are divided into a living section and a memorial section. In the living section, there is a building for the lady of the house, Sa-rang for the master, servant quarters, and an outbuilding. Due to Confucian influence, the living section is divided into female space with the lady’s building at the center and male area around Sa-rang, and there is a hierarchical relationship between the two areas. In the memorial section, there is a family shrine, where memorial tablets of ancestors are kept.
