We believe Thailand provides a unique context for our research.
For one thing, Thailand can be considered a Buddhist society. As
reported by Wongtada et al. (2006), about 95% of Thais practice
Buddhism. In contrast, people frommostWestern countries where the
mainstream research on both ethics and QWL tends to focus on are
likely to be Christians. Thailand is also unique in terms of cultural
values. As pointed out by Marta and Singhapakdi (2005), Hofstede's
(1980) research is most relevant especially in ethics studies since the
values he studied are “work related”. Based on Hofstede's cultural
typology, Thailand is also considerably different from Western
countries in terms of work-related values. Comparing Thailand to
the U.S., Marta and Singhapakdi (2005, p. 564) summarized that:
