Introduction
In recent years the sales volumes of cars for personal use in South-East Asia
including the ASEAN countries, South Korea, Taiwan, and China have been
growing very fast. This market has demonstrated a long-term growth trend,
although it has declined since the middle of 1997, due to the ending of the
bubble economy in the ASEAN area, especially Thailand. Countries in this area
are mutually stimulating the consumer pool of vehicle products under the
emerging Chinese market. From this point of view, Japanese car industries as
well as North American, European and Korean manufacturers etc. have been
moving quickly into this area to expand their market share. As a result,
offensive and defensive competition between global industries has been
accelerating in this region. At the same time, industrial countries in this region
have been trying to advance their national plans of encouraging domestic
production and some success in car parts manufacturing has been
accomplished in recent years. The ASEAN Free Trade Area (AFTA) was
organised for this process in January 1993, and its diversification in terms of
APEC is expected to be the principal cause of aggressive parts trading.
