In the current discussion, simulations of loblolly pine
plantations managed with low intensity inputs are compared to
simulations of stands managed with high intensity inputs
(Fig. 1a). In the low intensity case growth data from control
stands with minimal silviculture were utilized to parameterize
the model and a single commercial thinning was simulated
(Borders et al., 2004). In the high intensity case, growth data
from intensively managed experimental stands that received
early and repeated herbicide treatments and annual fertilization
were utilized and two thinnings were simulated to best
approximate the hypothetical condition of Table 5 (Borders
et al., 2004).
