The city-state of Athens was called the polis of the Athenians. It is estimated that in classical Athens there lived approximately 200000 inhabitants The great majority of them did not have the status of citizen which meant that they did not have full political right Among those inhabitants there were different kinds of status and different social classes aristocrats, demos, the people , foreigners-settlers called metics, foreigners from other states with the right of proxenia,polites from other which had received Athenian citizenship,slaves,freedmen,and women and children. about 100000 were free,and 40000 adult men had Athenian citizenship
