At all three checkouts, the operators have to work in
standing postures. They reach for products from the
end of the conveyor belt and pass them in front of the
vertical scanner before placing them in bags. Audible
signals inform the operator whether the barcode has
been successfully recognized or not. When the scan is
not successful, the cashier has to rescan the product and
eventually key in the bar code information. Unpackaged
fresh produce is weighed on scales positioned in front
of the vertical scanner. When the bags are packed they
are transferred onto the rear shelf for the customer to
take away.
