This paper was the result of a conference of University of
Vermont researchers representing multiple social and natural
science and humanities disciplines including but not limited
to sociology, economics, psychology, philosophy, engineering,
medicine, and anthropology. The title of the conference was:
“Quality of Life: What is it, how do we measure it, and how do
we enhance it?” The goals of the conference were to gather
members of the various research disciplines related to QOL in
order to develop a new, broader consensus on this critical
issue. The conference was supported by the University of
Vermont Honors College and we thank Robert Taylor, Dean of
the Honors College, for his help and support of this project. We
also thank Manfred Max-Neef and one anonymous reviewer
for helpful suggestions on an earlier draft.
