Despite our progress, the synergetic nature of interactions present under partial
discharge stressing continues to ensure that a clear understanding of discharge
degradation remains elusive.Without that understanding, the quest for new materials
capable of suppressing partial discharge activity will remain unfulfilled. Equally,
without that understanding, the ability of database techniques and associated
analytical/statistical tools to permit an accurate and objective assessment of insulation
integrity and remnant life for existing plant insulating systems will remain
flawed. It is perhaps time to recognise that a conscious shift to more fundamental
degradation studies, to improve our understanding of the mechanisms involved, is
the most efficient and effective way forward.
