The essay “Why You Matter to the Globe’s Future and How You Can Make a Difference” is composed of quotations, a poem, and a story on how personal responsibility is the key to making the world a better place. This is a persuasive essay attempting to convince the reader that every person plays an important role in global welfare and “in shaping the globe’s consensus about basic human values in the worldwide community." The writer of the article states various arguments to influence the reader that apathy and indifference can only hurt the community. The essay addresses the fact that most people believe that they can not make a significant difference in the world. Many of these beliefs stem from a self-centered, egotistical point of view where it is easier to convince one’s self that unless there is a personal gain, it is ineffective to attempt to change the system. Over the years, our society has deteriorated from this method of thinking. By people not trying to improve!
our society, the primary influences have been for the negative rather than for the positive. It is possible for good people to allow a negative environment to flourish by merely not acting or opposing the negative forces. Philosophers, over the years, have tried to explain how each person can have an impact on the universe. Humanity can help change society for the better or lead to its further destruction. As each person can influence one person, collectively they can influence a larger community of people. Alexander Pope expresses this thought by illustrating in his poem the impact of a small pebble being dropped in to a lake and then compares each circle of the water to a friend and leading out to the farthest circle which would be the world.
