Antifungal activities of several strains of lactic acid bacteria
have already been reported by many workers (Roy et al., 1996;
Magnusson et al., 2003; Sjögren et al., 2003; Mandal et al., 2013;
Das and Mandal, 2010). The strains of L. lactis subsp. lactis used
in this study were originally isolated in our laboratory from fermented
milk products (whey) and it was already found that they
have very good antibacterial and antifungal properties against both
plant as well as human pathogens (our unpublished observations).
Now it was found that these lactic acid bacteria are also effective to
kill fruit rot pathogen of jackfruit, therefore they may be utilized as
biocontrol agents to control the fruit rot and to increase shelf life
during long time postharvest preservation of fruits of jackfruit.
