Congruent with the existing literature, we observe that the outdoor temperature has a
U-shaped effect on the electricity infeed. Fig. 2 shows the relationship between the normalized electricity infeed and average daily outdoor temperature in the Netherlands.
Electricity infeed is minimized around 17 C. Hence, the variable is split into two variables which both have a linear effect on temperature: heating degree days (HDD) and cooling degree days (CDD).
