Systematic assessment of ongoing need when tubes, drains, and catheters are used, and suggestions to remove them as soon as patients appear ready are important nursing responsibilities. Multidisciplinary review of research and data collection and analysis of institution-specific routines can facilitate decision making with regard to the use of tubes, drains, and catheters as general practice issues. Nurses often serve as the catalyst for change in the “old way of doing things” by presenting evidence-based alternatives to the rest of the healthcare team
