communities have a Mayan origin and are ejidos. FCP has 227 eji-
datarios (land-holders with rights) and more than 47,000 ha of
communal land, with almost 10% of its territory within the limits of
the SKBR. The main livelihood activities in FCP are forestry and
subsistence agriculture. Ejidatarios fromFCP decided to create their
own conservation initiative, an ICCA named “Much Kanan K'aax”
(which means ‘Let's take care of the forest together’, in their native
Yucatec Mayan). This conservation initiative has an extension of
1230 ha, for which they have several complementary management
initiatives including reforestation, payment for carbon sequestra-
tion, and an ecotourism center. Both the creation and management
rules of this ICCA were defined by the ejidatarios themselves with
the support of a local NGO. FCP also has a PES program, which was
not included in this study because the certification is still in process.
Chunyaxche has 610 ejidatarios. By contrast to FCP, there is no ICCA
in Chunyaxche. Rather, some of the residents of this ejido work in
ecotourism in the neighboring SKBR. In accordance with the rules
established by CONANP, these tourist service providers have to be
organized in cooperatives and are required to collaborate in
monitoring activities inside the Biosphere Reserve before being
granted tourist guide permits.
We also worked with two communities in the state of Cam-
peche: Xmaben and Union 20 de Junio (formally named, and
henceforth referred to as La Mancolona). The two communities are
settled in the transition zone and buffer zone respectively of the
Calakmul Biosphere Reserve (CBR), the biggest PA of tropical forest
inMexico with an extension of 723,185 (CONANP, 2007). Xmaben is
a Yucatec Mayan community located north of the CBR, in the mu-
nicipality of Hopelchen. It is also organized as an ejido, it has a
population of 1300 inhabitants, of whom only 216 are ejidatarios.
The main economic activities of this ejido are subsistence agricul-
ture, apiculture and commercialization of rubber from Manilkara
zapota trees. In 2004, people from Xmaben decided to establish a
PES programin a forested area of 3451 ha,which e since then e has
beenmanaged following norms and rules established by CONAFOR.
The other community, La Mancolona, is located in the municipality
of Calakmul and comprises around 480 Tzeltal speaking people
originally fromChiapas. This community had to move to Campeche
in 1978 after the government established the Montes Azules
