To maintain integrity of harvested
tissues, only 1 to 2 animals were slaughtered
per day. Within each animal block, the order of animal
slaughters was determined at the onset of the treatment
period, such that all treatments and treatment
combinations were balanced among single or multiple
animal slaughter dates and animal slaughter pairs.
Steers were stunned with a captive-bolt gun, exsanguinated,
and the viscera were removed and placed into
a visceral cart for separation.
