As part of a larger program of research (Doss et al., 2012), 177
heterosexual couples presenting with relationship problems
participated in a couple therapy effectiveness study. The mean age
of the men was 49.8 years (SD ¼ 13.7), and of the women was 46.5
years (SD ¼ 13.3). The mean couple relationship duration was 13.6
years (SD ¼ 13.0 years). Eighty-three couples participated at the
Charleston, South Carolina Veteran's Administration Medical Center
(VAMC), and 94 couples participated at the San Diego, California
VAMC. All couples were referred by health providers within the
VAMC. The majority of couples were married (85%), 11% were
cohabiting, and the remaining couples were dating or separated.
Most participants were Caucasian, non-Hispanic (70% of males and
C.A. Pepping et al. / Behaviour Research and Therapy 65 (2015) 60e66 6168% of females), with the remainder of the sample being AfricanAmerican
(22% of males and 19% of females), Hispanic (6% of
males and 10% of females), and Asian-American (2% of males and 4%
of females). In the present study, only those 136 couples who
completed three or more sessions were included
