Fish serve as intermediate and definitive hosts
for digenean trematodes. 5,6 Digenean trematodes
of fish are all oviparous. Larval digeneans
(metacercareae) of fish may be found in almost
any tissue, including eyes (Diplostomum spp),
muscle and subcutis ("yellow grub," "black
spot,"; eg, Clinostomum spp, Neascus spp), abdominal
cavity, or widely disseminated. Eye flukes
cause blindness, and pathology of other larval
digeneans relates to the location of the resulting
space-occupying mass and/or cosmetic disfigurement.
Adult digeneans generally inhabit the
gastrointestinal tract, although some lodge in
other organs. They cause little damage in the
gastrointestinal tract, but blood flukes can inflict
severe damage to gill vasculature. Praziquantel is
recommended for treatment of both adult and
larval digenean trematodes. Isolated parasitic
cysts could be surgically removed. Prevention by
avoiding feeding of aquatic-source live food and
elimination of the snail intermediate hosts also is
recommended.
